Part 2: Obedience: James 1:22-25

  • Obedience is to be a doer of the word, not just a hearer.
  • Cultivating a lifestyle of obedience includes:
    • Orienting our lives toward the things of God by building spiritual habits of prayer, scripture reading, listening to sermons, reading spiritual books and interacting with others
    • Ordering our lives by creating boundaries of what we will do and not do.
    • Being intentional about doing the above, not just drifting through life and hoping a spiritual heart is developed.
  • The greatest hindrance to obedience is self-deception.  This is equating being around spiritual things rather than intentionally crafting our lives to do spiritual things.
  • How do we cultivate a heart of obedience?  Farming - just as a farmer sets the conditions for a seed to grow but cannot make the seed itself grow, so to must we with our lives.  The conditions included asking for a heart that desires obedience, creating habits in our lives (Atomic Habits by James Clear is a great book to help), and being involved in church to include serving, fellowship and being in a group.

Part 3: Dependence:  Psalm 127:1-2

  • Dependance is learning to looking to God to establish and direct the categories of our lives
  • Categories of life are:  spiritual, intellectual, physical, financial, marital, parental, social, vocational, online
  • Cultivating a lifestyle of dependence on God includes:
    1. Acknowledge we want Him to establish our houses
    2. Seek God in building our houses
    3. Protect our houses through periodical evaluation
  • How do we cultivate a lifestyle?
    1. Memorize this scripture
    2. Ask for a heart of dependence from God (depend on God to give you a heart of dependence)
    3. Begin each work day with reminding yourself of this truth.
